10 things about me
-
I used to live in Putney (like Mizzy). Now I live on Vancouver Island in Canada, with my husband, our son, and a Korean rescue dog called Luna.
-
My favourite Pipsqueak colour is sweet pea green.
-
I'm still a bit terrified of escalators and heights make my tummy wobble.
-
Three of my favourite people are my nephews, who I smushed all together to make Oli. My most favourite (and only) son will appear in Mizzy’s next adventure as a donkey.

-
My favourite ice-cream is a Raspberry Magnum.
-
My favourite breakfast cereal is Frosties.
-
My favourite detective is Miss Marple.
-
When I grow up I want to be a published author. Wait...does that mean I'm grown up now?
-
The very first thing I remember wanting to be is a bareback rider in a circus (but, you know, heights).
-
The mystery I'd really like to solve is what happened to the bag full of shells I left on the little train at Dungeness in August 1971.
10 things about Mizzy

-
I live in Putney in SW London, with my mum and dad.
-
My favourite Pipsqueak colour is dinky pink.
-
I'm scared of a lot of things, but escalators are THE WORST.
-
I love all of my family (even Great Uncle Raymond), but Oli is my favourite (don't tell Niko).
-
My least favourite person is Judy Mitcham (but Mum says I still have to be nice to her).
-
My favourite breakfast cereal is Shreddies.
Nice Stuff People are saying...

-
My favourite detective is Rachel Bailey, from Scott and Bailey.
-
My favourite ice cream is a ninety-nine (with two flakes please).
-
When I grow up I want to be Rachel Bailey. If I can't be her, I'll be an even better detective.
-
The best mystery I've solved so far is working out who killed Great Aunt Jane... (all on my own, with a tidgy bit of help from Oli).
"This absorbing, accessible story makes for a perfect ‘first’ murder mystery – packed with all the right ingredients like clues, red herrings, twists and turns, but nothing gruesome or gory. A total delight!” BookTrust
“This makes our Top 10 because of its page-turning murder mystery, endearing heroine and cast of English eccentrics.” The Bookseller Children’s Buyers Guide Spring 2025
“A wonderfully engaging and exciting book; fast-paced and full of fun, this story will appeal to children of a curious nature” INIS Magazine
"I absolutely adore this crafty, sassy, witty, brave new mystery solving heroine - the one and only, the marvellous, the unforgettable, Mizzy." The Kids' Book Curator
"Genuinely brilliant neurodivergent representation … Hatcher-Smith has created a truly unique heroine in Mizzy, who is smart and brilliantly stubborn … The story is taut and twisting – peopled with a cast of fantastically English eccentrics – and the denouement is pleasingly unguessable. A brilliant debut." Charlotte Eyre, The Bookseller

THE MIZZY MYSTERIES is the result of my career-long desire to give children with Down Syndrome the chance to see themselves as the star of the story. But Mizzy isn’t just about Down Syndrome. It’s also a fun, twisty, family-history mystery which encourages readers to smash all sorts of stereotypes and imagine what people might be like beneath the surface. Most of all, Mizzy aims to remind readers that they should never underestimate anyone, especially themselves.

In other words, both my books and my speech and language therapy work are all about empathy. With 35 years working with students aged 3-18 years in a variety of school settings, I am passionate about supporting children to develop self-awareness and esteem, at the same time as encouraging them to explore how other people might have different strengths and thoughts and feelings.

In-person and Online Visits
I also love doing in-person and online school visits. I currently offer 2 empathy-focused events:

1. Mizzy’s Feelings Detective Assembly (50 minutes)
-
I support the students to guess key information about me, using photo clues from my life.
-
I then introduce Mizzy and the book and, during a brief reading, students are encouraged to listen for clues to Mizzy’s personality.
-
After the reading, I collate the clues identified by the students to create a description of Mizzy, including her detective superpower EMPATHY.
-
Following a brief discussion of what empathy is (and isn’t), as well as why empathy skills are important:as detectives, as readers/writers and as human beings, I lead the students in a FEELINGS DETECTIVE game: a fun, highly interactive and thought-provoking improv-drama activity which promotes affective and cognitive empathy. (Volunteers are shown an emotion card and then act out the target emotion, while also performing an action suggested by the group. The group use their feelings-detective skills to guess the emotion being acted).
-
The game is followed by a group quiz: WHAT SORT OF DETECTIVE ARE YOU? The whole audience participates at the same time, with designated actions for a/b/c answers, to find out if they are more of a Mizzy, an Oli, or a Grandma Mabel.
-
The event wraps up with a Q&A.
-
For this event, Claire will require a means to share her Powerpoint presentation, as well as enough floor space for up to six students to be involved in each round of the drama game.

2. Create your own Detective Workshop (50 minutes)
-
With examples from the Mizzy Mysteries, I walk the students through my approach to character creation, using a Mizzy-themed worksheet framework.
-
I then support students to write a short scene introducing their detective, highlighting the importance of “showing rather telling” the reader who their character is. If time allows, students will be invited to share their scenes. I’m always happy to view students’ final work and provide feedback to their class teacher.

NB I offer in-person visits in the UK during March and across British Columbia throughout the year. Online visits can be arranged pretty much anywhere, if we can find a mutually convenient time.

"Last week we welcomed the amazing author and all round lovely human, Claire Hatcher-Smith, sharing her brand new book 'The Mizzy Mysteries: A Skeleton in the closet'. Students were treated to an interactive assembly in which Claire helped them explore empathy and emotions and shared with them her experience of a career as a writer, followed by a creative writing workshop in the library." Farmor High School, Fairford, Gloucestershire

School Visit Reviews:
"This week we had the privilege of hosting author Claire Hatcher-Smith, who led an inspiring workshop based on her book, "The Mizzy Mysteries." We were enthralled by her storytelling and gained valuable insights into the writing process, which has sparked our own creative ideas for writing detective stories." Shoreham Village School, Kent
"We had a wonderful visit from Claire Hatcher-Smith on World book day. She was fantastic and the children really enjoyed getting into character as detectives with her. Visits like this are so important and the children really do take inspiration from them. The ones who have finished the book are desperate to know when the next one is out!" Stonar Prep School, Atworth, Wiltshire
